Physics 1 Flashcards
(27 cards)
What do we use to measure energy?
Joules, J
What is a fuel?
A store of energy that is released when fuel is burned
Which energy store is involved in heating or cooling?
Thermal Energy Store
Energy Store
When energy is held by an object for a time
Which energy store is involved in fuels, food and batteries?
Chemical Energy Store
How is energy moved between energy stores?
By energy transfer
The law of conservation of energy
Energy can’t be created or destroyed
How can we tell which foods are energy rich?
Compare the energy values on food labels
What do we call a thousand Joules?
Kilojoules, kJ
Which energy store is involved with movement?
Kinetic Energy Store
Which energy store is involved when an object is lifted or dropped?
Gravitational Potential energy store
Which energy store is involved when something is stretched or squished?
Elastic energy store
Name the five main energy stores
Chemical, thermal, kinetic, elastic, gravitational
Name the four energy transfers
Transfer by waves, electric current, heat, mechanically
Power
A measure of how quickly energy is transferred
What is power measure in?
Watts, W
What is the equation for the amount of W = J/s
1W = 1J/s
The power equation
P= E ÷ T
A TV set has a power of 800 watts and o switched on for 30 seconds. Calculate the energy transferred
- P = E ÷ T
- E = P x T
- = 800 x 30
- = 24,000 J
How to convert W to kW
x1000
Renewable Resources
Will not run out
eg. Wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, biomass
Non-renewable resources
Cannot be replaced, they are finite. Eg. Oil, gas, coal, nuclear
Fossil Fuels
Coal, oil, gas
