Physics 2 Flashcards
(31 cards)
What unit do we use to measure distance?
Metres, M
What unit do we use to measure time?
Seconds, S
What unit do we use to measure speed?
Metres per second, m/s
What does 1 m/s mean?
One metre is travelled per second
What equation links speed, distance and time?
Speed = distance ÷ time or s = d ÷ t
What does mph / miles per hour mean?
We don’t use Mph in science!
How far will you travel in 2 hours if you are travelling at 50 mph?
100 miles ( 2 x 50 = 100)
I am running at 6 m/s. How far do I travel in 2 seconds?
12 m/s ( 6 x 2 = 12)
A lorry takes 12s to travel 48m. What is its speed?
- S = d ÷ t
- S = 48 ÷ 12
- = 4 m/s
What is the relationship between energy, power and time?
E = p x t
An elephant runs for 12s and has a power of 2500 W.
- E = p x t
- E = 2500 x 12
- = 30 kJ
What two things do we need to measure speed?
Distance and time
Which store of energy is DECREASING in a car as it moves down a ramp?
Gravitational potential energy
Which store if energy is INCREASING in a car as it moves down a ramp?
Kinetic energy
What is a line of inquiry?
A focused question about what you are trying to find out
Variable
Anything you can change
Independent Variable
You can change it or it might change by itself
Dependent Variable
Changes depending on the independent variable
Controlled Variable
Variable that we keep the same, they don’t affect the experiment
Prediction
Using scientific knowledge to suggest what you think will happen
Relative Motion
The speed of a moving object from the viewpoint of another moving object
If two object move in the SAME direction, how do you calculate their relative speed?
Subtract their individual speeds from each other
Of two objects are moving in OPPOSITE directions, how do you calculate their relative speed?
Add their individual speeds to one another
