Piaget's theory: application in education Flashcards
readiness?
ageing - cognitive development
cannot peform activities before being biologically ready
apropriate level for childs age - not mature enough only aquire skills superficially
trul understand - wait till ready
Learning by discovery?
discover concepts themselves - rather than rote learning - acitve role in there education
create enviroment to stimulate children to ask questions - plan activity so child is challeged to develop current schemas -
Individual learing?
all go through same stages - different rates
activties for individuals rather than the whole class
Application of the stages?
sensorimotor - rich stimulating enviroment - sensory experiments and motor coordination - play with toys that squeek when squeezed
pre operational - play dressing up - reduces egocentrism - hands on activities - experimental
Concrete operational - conrete materials to manipulate - cooking - following logical sequences of instructions
formal operational stage - scientific activity will help than understand logic - discussions ing groups to discuss what an ideal world may be like
PEvaluation?
strenghth: enormous effect on primary uk education - plowden report 1967 - review primary education and make reccomendations - drew extemsiveley on Piage’t theory - and reccomended more child centred rather than more teacher centred education like rote learning of the time - value of education
weakness: piage’t emphasis on discovery learning may not be best approach - neville bennet - formal traditional methods of teaching with piage’t child centred active approach - explanation to whole class give exercises for practice - active experiment for themselves and see what works - formal methods did better in reading , maths, english than child centred approach - some aspects are best taught through direct instructions rather than active learning
