Q

Symptoms of TMV

A

Leaves discolour in a yellow mosaic pattern = reduced rate of photosynthesis
So plant growth reduced

Q

Rose black spot symptoms

A

Causes leaves to develop purple and black spots
Turns yellow then falls off :(
Reduces rate of photosynthesis to fall
So stunted growth

9
Q

Physical responses

A

Cell wall + waxy cuticle difficult for microorganisms (pathogens) to penetrate and attack
Dead cells around stems (bark) barrier to microorganisms (pathogens)

10
Q

How does bark work?

A

As it ages, eventually falls off then replaced by new bark underneath

12
Q

Mechanical responses

A

Sharp thorns stop herbivores eating it
Hairs which irritate herbivores mouths
Leaves that move when touched to scare away herbivores
Mimicry

Q

Mimicry

A

Appearing to be another plant that’s dangerous to avoid being eaten eg looking like a stinging nettle despite not stinging

16
Q

Ways of diagnosing plant disease

A

Look for:
Discolouration
Spots on leaves
Stunted growth
Decay
Growths
Malformed stems or leaves

17
Q

Methods of actually diagnosing plant diseases

A

Look at garden manual/website
Take it to a lab to identify pathogen
Use testing kit containing monoclonal antibodies

18
Q

Plant ion deficiency diseases

A

Plant diseases caused by it being deprived of needed ions

19
Q

Nitrate deficiency

A

Nitrate ions needed for protein synthesis
As they combine with glucose to form amino acids which are needed for protein synthesis

20
Q

Chlorosis

A

Aka magnesium ion deficiency
They are needed to make chlorophyll
So less light is absorbed for photosynthesis thus less growth
