plant tissue structure Flashcards
(7 cards)
what are the layers of cells found within a leaf?
waxy cuticle, upper epidermis, palisade layer, spongey mesophyll, lower epidermis + guard cells, waxy cuticle
what is the purpose of the waxy cuticle?
it is waterproof to prevent excess loss of water
how is the upper epidermis adapted for photosynthesis?
upper epidermis cells don’t have nucleii to allow sunlight to pass through
what is the purpose of the palisade layer?
palisade cells are packed with chloropasts to carry out photosynthesis and store starch
what is the spongey mesophyll?
mostly air spaces to allow for gas exchange within the leaf, also where vascular bundles are
what are guard cells?
cells which form closeable pores known as stomata, mostly on the bottom of the leaf
how do gases move through the leaf?
mostly via diffusion through the spaces in the spongey mesophyll and can be lost and gained through the stomata
