explain the method to testing someones blood glucose
- Introduction
- Explain procedure and gain consent (this test will involve a small fingerprick to draw some blood, so we can obtain your blood glucose levels).
- Insert test strip into the monitor.
- Wash your hands and then wipe patient’s finger with alcohol swab.
- Use lancet to prick side of middle finger, which should be pressed against the desk. 45 degree angle - side of finger
- Draw a drop of blood and place onto sample end of test strip.
- Use tissue to apply pressure to finger and then apply plaster. Dispose of lancet in sharps bin.
- Record results.
results and interpretation
- Fasting = 4-5.4 mmol/l is normal. 4-7 mmol/l indicates diabetes.
- Up to 2 hours after eating = up to 7.8mmol/l is normal. Under 9mmol/l for type 1 and under 8.5mmol/l for type 2 diabetes.

- Polyuria
- Excessive thirst
- Fatigue

- Recurrent infections (skin, thrush, UTI…)

cultural aspects of diet
small changes are better - harder to adapt and upkeep large changes
taste and cooking ability
what could we reccomend to someone whos diet consists of rice and noodles due to cultural reasons
smaller portions
add to volume by adding vegetables instead
substitution - wholegrain
eat this less frequently in the week
what advice could we give someone who enjoys a can of full fat fizzy drink daily
fruit juice instead - not from concentrate to reduce any consumption of added sugars
have it three times a week instead of every day
