method
A
- Introduction and explain test (this test will involve me using an automatic blood pressure machine to take your blood pressure. I will place the cuff around your arm, and it will inflate, meaning you will feel some pressure for around 20 seconds.
- Switch machine on and ensure it is working.
- Place cuff on patient’s arm. Ask them to sit up straight, uncross their legs and not to speak for the duration of the test.
- Start the machine.
- Record the reading.

results and interpretation
A
- At home, a reading of 135/85 or higher is considered to be stage 1 hypertension.
- In a pharmacy, clinic or GP, a reading of 140/90 is considered to be stage 1 hypertension.
- Same-day specialist referral for 180/120 or higher with signs of retinal haemorrhage or papilledema (swelling of optic nerve head).
