A
  1. Introduction and explain test (this test will involve me using an automatic blood pressure machine to take your blood pressure. I will place the cuff around your arm, and it will inflate, meaning you will feel some pressure for around 20 seconds.
  2. Switch machine on and ensure it is working.
  3. Place cuff on patient’s arm. Ask them to sit up straight, uncross their legs and not to speak for the duration of the test.
  4. Start the machine.
  5. Record the reading.

results and interpretation

A
  • At home, a reading of 135/85 or higher is considered to be stage 1 hypertension.
  • In a pharmacy, clinic or GP, a reading of 140/90 is considered to be stage 1 hypertension.
  • Same-day specialist referral for 180/120 or higher with signs of retinal haemorrhage or papilledema (swelling of optic nerve head).
