  • Basic decision making mechanism in democratic systems.
  • will of the majority prevails.
  • Simple majority (or bare majority): 50% +1 vote
  • Qualified majority (or Super majority): a higher threshold is required for a measure to be considered adopted (60%, 2/3, 4/5) = This is often required to modify constitutions

    Examples:

  • Elite rule: In traditional, pre-democratic societies. Elites ruled and the right to vote was passed through blood.
  • in a democratic society, the elite continue to rule; the people when they choose who will govern are selecting among elites.

What are 2counter arguments to the critique on liberal democracy?

A
  1. In democratic societies, dynamic economies and public education create opportunities for socio-economic advancement. It’s possible to improve your life status become an elite.
  2. Modern democratic societies are pluralistic (made up of many diverse groups) Each of these groups has leaders (elites). Through networking, the elites of smaller groups can become leaders of larger groups - All the way up to national level.
