Pollution Flashcards
(5 cards)
Pollution
undesirable change in the environment caused by human activities,
Air pollution
it is caused by the Burning of fuels in
factories, power stations
and motor vehicles. It Causes respiratory illnesses like asthma and bronchitis and Forms acid rain, which damages buildings and makes
many habitats unsuitable to live in
Water pollution
It is caused by the Release of untreated
sewage and industrial
waste into rivers and seas,
Oil spills from ships and
Plastic waste dumped as
rubbish into rivers and
seas. Toxic pollutants can kill marine organisms
and sewage Carries bacteria that cause diseases such as cholera
Oil Sticks to the feathers of sea birds and the fur of
animals such as seals, which may kill them
Many animals, such as sea turtles, die as a result of
swallowing the plastics thrown into their habitat
Land pollution
It is caused by rubbish thrown on land. It Becomes breeding grounds for pests such as
cockroaches, rats and houseflies and These animals can spread diseases and cause food
poisoning
Lichens
They are living indicators, and more species grow where the air is cleaner. They absorb everything they need from the air as they have no roots. The pollutants that affect lichens are sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. They make rainwater very acidic, which makes it difficult for lichens to grow.
