Polyatomic Ions Flashcards
(9 cards)
If a polyatomic ion contains oxygen, what is it called?
An oxyanion
Which PAI are cations?
NH4+ and Hg2 2+
Given two variations of a PAI, what is the naming scheme?
Less oxygen: ITE suffix (SO3=sulphite)
More oxygen: ATE suffix (SO4=sulphate)
Given four variations of a PAI, what is the naming scheme?
1 Oxygen (least): Hypo prefix + Ite suffix
2 Oxygen (middle-least): Ite suffix
3 Oxygen (middle-most): Ate suffix
4 Oxygen (most): Per prefix + Ate suffix
For variations of an acid, what is the naming scheme?
Least Oxygen: Hypo prefix + OUS suffix
Less Oxygen: OUS Suffix (H2SO3= Sulphurous acid)
More Oxygen: IC suffix (H2SO4= Suphuric acid)
Most Oxygen: Per prefix + IC suffix
For acids without oxygen, what is the naming scheme?
The name of the acid contains the Hydro prefix
(HCN= Hydrocyanic Acid)
What is the charge on all Nitrogen Based PAI?
Both Nitrogen based PAI have charges of -1
(Nitrate and Nitrite)
What is the charge on all Sulphur Based PAI?
Both Sulphur based PAI have charges of -2
(Sulphite and Sulphate)
What is the charge on all Chlorine Based PAI?
All 4 Chlorine based PAI have charges of -1
(hypochlorite, chlorite, chlorate and perchlorate)
