Poor Quality Housing Flashcards
(6 cards)
Overcrowding
Many people lived in single room homes with multiple people. This caused diseases like TB to spread very easily causing sickness, due to people being in close proximity.
Poor sanitation
Houses shared a single toilet, which wasn’t connected to a sewage system. This caused the spread of disease to be rife.
Lack of ventilation
Insufficient access to fresh air due to industrial fumes, lack of chimneys and windows. This caused respiratory issues like TB.
Lack of sunlight
Houses were often built high and back to back. This caused sunlight to be obstructed leading to Vitamin D deficiencies and rickets giving them bone and joint difficulty.
Poor Quality Housing
Houses were often built with cheap materials. This caused poor heating and potential building collapses.
Lack of fresh water
Many houses were not connected to a water supply instead, people could get water from places, such as streams, wells and stand pipes, but this water was often polluted by human waste. This resulted in people developing cholera. (leading to epidemics)
