What is an ecosystem?
A community of species interacting with the abiotic components of their habitat
How do you calculate photosynthetic efficiency?
Quantity of light captured by plant/ quantity of light falling on the plant X 100
Why might not all light falling on a plant be absorbed?
The wrong wavelength

What is GPP?
Gross primary productivity, it is the rate of production of chemical energy by photosynthesis
What is NPP?
Net primary productivity, it is the energy/food available to consumers
How do you calculate NPP?
GPP-respiration = NPP
What is primary productivity?
The rate at which producers convert energy to biomass/food
What is secondary productivity?
The rate that consumers accumulate energy from food in their cells or tissues
Where is the energy lost as food is passed down a food chain?
Energy in molecules egested
Energy lost as heat
Energy remains in the parts of animals/plants not eaten like bones
