Posture And Balance Flashcards
(13 cards)
Posture and balance
The ability to recover from instability and to move in ways that avoid instability
Example of correct posture and balance
Standing with correct body alignment can reduce the effects of gravity
How does the body keep good posture
There is an interaction between visual and vestibular input, somatosensory input and muscle reflexes
How should we keep correct posture in dancing
(Deportment) The spine should be lengthened but not flattened. It should be supported and maintained by abdominal and back muscles. Etc…
Compensation mechanism
If the body is held out of alignment, it must compensate elsewhere in order to maintain good posture.
Example of a compensation mechanism
A swayed back needs a tilt forward if the pelvis and vertebrae’s in spine need to be switched on
Turnout
Limited by a bony structure (shape of femur determines turnout), tightness of the capsular ligaments, strength of the hip external rotators and muscle elasticity.
Plies
Bending of both knees with weight equally distributed and knee and foot in a straight line as well as pelvis in correct alignment
Fondus
The bending of only one leg, alignment of plié on supporting lent must be amplified and the hip abductors and gluteus mediums switched on.
Rises
Correct posture with a gradual transfer of weight as well as strong knee and ankle alignment
Devlopes
All-Leg lifts should only be to the height that the dancers pelvis begins to move and the strength that they can maintain correct alignment. Hip and spine will need to move.
Devant- pelvis tilts up on side of working leg
Arabesque-body tilts forward
Jumps
Starts from plié or fondu, heels down to act as as shock absorbers. If we continue this exercise to improve stamina it is counterproductive as dancer becomes fatigued and wrong muscles get used
Example of bad jumps
Sticking bottom out and leaning forward
