Q

What is the method for the Graded Exercise Test?

A
  1. Obtain resting HR & BP immediately prior to exercise in a resting state & record.
  2. Properly position the client on the ergometer (upright posture, approx. 25 degrees bend at knee at maximal leg extension and hands in the proper on the handlebars). You can estimate seat height by having participant stand next to bike seat and set it to the level of the lilac crest.
  3. Before commencing the test complete a 2-3min warm up to acquaint the participant with the cycle ergometer and prepare them for the exercise intensity in the first stage of the test. Instruct them to pedal at a steady pedal frequency of 50 watts, this will show on the screen of the bike.
  4. The client should then have a 2min break off the bike prior to commencing the test to perform some dynamic stretches.
  5. Each workload should be performed at the required watts ensuring the intensity increases each workload (every 4min). Individual adjustments can be made, just ensure each workload is increasing.
  6. Heart rate will be measured every 15sec throughout the test and recorded.
  7. Blood pressure will be measured during the last minute of each workload, whilst the participant continues to cycle. To take BP during exercise ensure the participants arm is rested by placing it on your shoulder whilst you measure.
  8. RPE should be recorded at the end of each workload.
  9. All physiologic observations (E.G HR and signs and symptoms) should be continued for at least 5min of recovery unless abnormal responses occur, which would warrant a longer post-test surveillance period. Conduct a cool down by cycling at a low intensity (speed and resistance) and continue until HR stabilises, but not necessarily until they reach pre-exercise levels. Measure post exercise BP and HR whilst client is in a seated position and record.
