IV Catheters
Administer fluids to patient
24 gauge- neonates
22 gauge-small cats and toy dogs

*The bigger the gauge, the smaller the needle*
Over the Needle Catheter
Most common
Typically placed in cephalic vein
Catheter covers the outside of the needle
Through the Needle Catheter
AKA jugular catheter/venocath
Long and flexible
Butterfly Catheter
Contains a needle and two wings (NOT for suturing in place)
Used for blood draw and injections
SHORT TERM

Urinary Catheters
Used to collect urine samples, relieve pressure in the bladder, infuse medications
Measured in french 1 Fr = 1/3 mm
*the larger the number in french, the larger the diameter
Red Rubber Catheter
Very flexible
Can be used to collect urine, a feeding tube or to deliver oxygen
Can be used on cats but we have better options

Rigid and plastic
Used to unblock CANINE patients
SHORT TERM

Foley Catheter
Flexible and rubber
Cuff used to HOLD IN PLACE
Has two ports

Tom Cat Catheter
Short and stiff with wings
Used to UNBLOCK MALE CATS or cats with FUS/FLUTD
SHORT TERM

Slippery Sam
Short and soft
Has holes around the hub for suturing in place
MALE CATS
LONG TERM
Penrose Drain
Flexible tubing used for draining wounds and accesses
Can be used as a tourniquet
Removed in 3-5 days
Jackson Pratt Drain
A fenestrated tube to suck out fluid with negative pressure
Modified JP Drain
Uses a butterfly catheter
Applied fenestration
The wings are sutured into place
Cheaper and smaller
Trocar Catheter
Long traumatic trocar used to pull fluid/air out of chest cavity
Measured in french
Placed intra-op or under heavy sedation
*Emergency thoracentesis*
IV Drip Sets
Tubing used to connect the fluid bags to the T-port
All contain a drip chamber and a fast ball for control of the amount of fluid
Macro-Drip Set
DOES NOT have a needle in the drip chamber
Allows for larger drops
Used on animals 20 + pounds
10 drops/ ml 15 drops/ ml 20 drops/ ml
Micro- Drip Set
DOES have a needle in the chamber
Allows for smaller drops
Used on animals 20 - pounds
60 drops/ ml
Soluset or Buretrol Set
Micro drip set that contains a large fluid chamber
Used on small patients that require specific amount
Used to deliver medication w/o contamination
60 drops/ ml
T-Port
Tubing used between the catheter and drip set/ extension set
Bandage Scissors
Blunt tip to prevent stabbing
Tip the nose up to prevent cutting the skin
Suture Scissors
Notch on the bottom blade to allow for removing sutures
Alligator Forceps
Long, narrow forces with jaws used to remove foreign objects from body
Ears, nose, fistulas
Three-Way Stopcock
A valve allows for the three-way flow of air or fluid
Piller (Pill gun)
Used to administer pills, tablets, or capsules
