INDICATION

A

(1) children 6 weeks - 5 years (prior to 6th birthday)
a) PCV13 is not routinely given to healthy children age 6 years and older
(2) adults 50 years and older for prevention of pneomonia

OF DOSES

A

(1) children - 4 doses
(2) Adults 50 years and older - 1 dose
(3) Adults w/ immunocompromising conditions:

(a) PCV13 naive persons should receive a dose of PCV13 first, followed by a dose of PPSV23 at least 8 weeks later
(b) persons w/ previous vaccination w/ PPSV23 should be given a PCV13 dose 1 year or more after the last PPSV23 dose was received

CONTRAINDICATIONS

A

severe allergic rxn to any component of Prevnar 13 or any diptheria toxoid-containing vaccine

PRECAUTIONS

A

(1) moderate or severe acute illness w/ or w/out fever
(2) apnea following IM vaccination has been observed in some infants born prematurely (risk/benefit analysis before vaccinating)

ADVERSE REACTIONS

A

(1) infants & toddlers: irritability, decreased appetite, decreased sleep, increased sleep, fever, injection site redness, swelling, & tenderness
(2) adults 50 and older: fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, decreased appetite, arm movement limitation, chills, rash, injection site pain/ redness/ swelling
