primary and secondary immune response Flashcards
(8 cards)
what is a primary immune response
when the body is introduced to new antigens from a pathogen for the first time
what is the production of antibodies like in the primary immune response
slow
why is the production of antibodies slow during the primary immune reponse
there are few b cells specific to the antigens on the pathogen and it will take time for these b cells to divide into plasma cells which can then secrete antibodies
how is immunity created during a primary response
some b cells will divide into memory cells creating immunity
what is a secondary immune response
when the body is exposed to antigens that it has previously been exposed to before
what is the production of antibodies like in a secondary immune response
fast
why are antibodies produced rapidly during the secondary immune response
memory b cells recognise the antigens on the pathogen and then divide into plasma cells to secrete antibodies to destroy the pathogen before any symptoms appear
