vaccinations Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
explain step by step how vaccines work
A
- dead or inactive pathogens are injected
- this causes antibodies to be produced which are complimentary to the antigens on the pathogen
- memory cells are able to detect the antigens and so they are also produced
- when the body is next exposed to the specific pathogen, the immune system will be able to produce memory much faster and divide into plasma cells by mitosis
- these plasma cells produce antibodies much faster as well and therefore pathogens can be destroyed before symptoms are experienced
2
Q
why are vaccines safe to use
A
- the pathogens are inactive and weakened
- the antigens can be isolated from the pathogen
- harmless forms of toxins
3
Q
what are the ethical issues towards vaccines
A
- they are tested on animals before used
- during clinical trials, they are tested on humans putting them at risk
- objections due to side effects
- problems deciding who should receive it first
4
Q
why does the vaccine fail sometimes
A
- fails to work in certain people (immunodeficiency)
- can infect someone before enough antibodies are produced
- pathogens can mutate
- some people object
5
Q
what is active natural immunity
A
you develop this immunity when produce antibodies after an infection
6
Q
what is active artificial immunity
A
being injected with pathogens and so as a response the body produces antibodies
7
Q
what is a passive natural immunity
A
this is when you become immune due to antibodies being transmitted from mother to baby (breastmilk)
