Probability statistics and inference Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is probability
The extent to which an event is likely to occur
What is a hypothesis
Hypothesis is a prediction concerning the kind of results that are expected
What is inferential statistics used for
To say that the difference reflects more than just a chance so it can be generalised to the whole population
What is the P value
This is that the probability that the results appeared by chance
What is alpha
This is the level at which results are significant
So if p is less than 0.050 it is significant
What is type one error
This is known as false discovery when data appears to be significant but in fact it isn’t
What is Type II error
This is a failure to detect a significant affect when there is a real affect in the population
