The Experimental Method Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a variable
A variable is something we measure observe or manipulate
What is correlational research
It is not an experiment
It is an association between two events
We measure the strength of relationship
Correlation does not imply causation
What is an experiment
And experiment is a method to test the effect of an independent variable and the dependent variable
It tries to determine cause and affect
What is between participants design
This is where the same participants only take part in one condition
Independent groups or match pairs
What is the weather in participants design
This is where participants take part in all conditions
Repeated measures design
What is counterbalancing
This is a technique used to try and avoid order Effects
Half of the group complete the experiment in one order the other half complete it in the reverse order
What are order affects
Please are variables caused by the order in which an experiment takes place that may affect the outcome of the experiment Examples: Fatigue Practice Carryover affects
What is blinding
This is where in order to avoid influence over the study as many individuals as possible are blinded to be aims or details of the study
What is ecological validity
This is whether an experiment reflects the real world
What is external and internal validity
External validity is if we can generalise
Internal validity asks whether the study minimises bias
What is test retest reliability
This is will we get the same findings when we do the study again is it repeatable
What is inter-rater reliability
If multiple observers were used do they have agreement in what they see
What is placebo affect
This is where a patient receives a treatment such as a pill with no active ingredient that should not make a difference however because they are receiving a treatment they show a difference
What is a longitudinal study
A study that takes place over a long period of time
