production aids Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
reference points
A
- a datum
- a starting point from where all measurements are taken
- increases accuracy and reduces measurement error
- often used to scale drawings
- important in aligning CAM machines
2
Q
templates
A
- shapes that can be drawn or cut around to produce a specific shape
- using a template ensures all designs are identical
- quicker than drawing a design to scale every time as reusable
- need to be strong and hardwearing so they can be repetitively used
3
Q
jigs
A
- used to guide tools, or makes sure the workpiece is positioned in the right place for machining
- come in different shapes and sizes made specifically for a particular job
- improve accuracy
- speed up process and simplify making process
- e.g drilling jigs ensure holes are drilled in the same place
4
Q
patterns
A
- templates that can be used in textiles or casting
- textiles: used to trace outlines onto textiles so they can be cut out and sewn together
- casting: patterns commonly made from metal, wood and plastic resin, molten material poured into the mould created by the reusable pattern to create an object the same shape as the pattern
