scissors
good for basic cutting but not suited to intricate or refined cutting work
craft knives
used with safety rulers to cut and score material, good for making straight cuts
scalpels
small, sharp and thin blades ideal for cutting intricate details, replaceable blades
rotary cutters
use a circular blade that rotates to cut paper and card, good for curved cuts
guillotines
used to cut sheets of paper with a straight edge, used to cut large sheets
laser cutters
use lasers to cut intricate patterns into paper and board, burn through material to provide extremely accurate and fine cuts
compass cutters
used to cut perfect arcs and circles in paper and card
perforating tools
- punch small holes through paper
- allows it to be easily torn
- can be done by using rotary handheld perforating tools, die cutters and laser cutters
scoring
- involves partially cutting into a material without going all the way through, usually to aid folding
- performed before folding thick paper that would otherwise be difficult to fold
- can be done by hand using a craft knife and metal ruler
- press lightly so blade doesn’t cut all the way through
- results in straighter, more accurate folds
folding
- paper / board folded along creases or scored lines
- some items e.g wine boxes can be folded by hand from pre-cut material, creased ready for assembly and stored flat to save space
- specialist folding machines can be used to fold large quantities quickly and accurately
