the different shapes and sizes you can buy the material in
forms of paper and board
sheets, ply, rolls
ply
- consists of layered paper, either two or three sheets
- layers are held together through embossing or with glue - this helps with absorption or strength
- e.g kitchen roll
rolls
- used in the printing industry
- ideal as they can be used for continuous runs
sheets
- commonly sold to consumers and home users in sheets
- compatible with printers and photocopiers
why does paper come in standard stock sizes?
to enable them to be universally used on all printer brands.

why are stock forms used?
- cheaper to transport and use materials
- reduce environmental impact
- reduce waste
stock sizes
- A0, A1, A2 etc.
- A3 and A4 are most commonly used
paper weight
- measured in grams per square metre
- anything above 200gsm is considered board
what can paper and board be sold by?
size, thickness, weight, colour
bulk buying
- economies of scale: buying in bulk will allow for reduced material/components costs and manufactures will secure discounts that can be
passed on to the customer - stock forms: buying exactly the
quantity of materials required for a product or range of products knowing they can be used without waste - standard components: bought in bulk to secure discounts and reduce final product cost
