Q

On the readability scale what does 1-3 mean and what should not happen when this is the case?

A

1 = Unreadable
2 = Readable now and then
3 = Readable but with difficulty

A flight should not be flown with these readability scores.

Q

When turning on the intercom system, the squelch should be set to a minimum and volume should be set. How can you adjust the squelch and volume properly?

Name 3 parts of the process

A

With no speaking, adjust the squelch until ambient noise stops.
Speak into the microphone to ensure the squelch is broken when you talk.
This process may need to be repeated due to increase ambient noise (Engine noise)

Q

What is VOX?

A

Voice Operated Transmission/Exchange is the system that allows a person to transmit over the intercom when a sound is detected. Using the Squelch this can be adjusted so only voices are detected.

Q

When is an audio panel (complex intercom) used in an aircraft?

A

When there are multiple COM/NAV radios, often have separate volume and squelch controls for the pilot and co-pilots. An Audio panel can be functionally split into listen and speak areas of the panel

Q

True or False? Using the audio panel (complex intercom) you can listen and transmit on two frequencies at once.

A

False. You can only listen to two frequencies at once, you can only transmit on one.

19
Q

True or False? Some installations allow a split so that the pilot can transmit and receive on COM1 and the co-pilot can do the same on COM2.

A

True. This can be done at the same time.

20
Q

How can the intercom system allow the pilot to listen to the radio and not listen to the passengers (passengers can still communicate with each other)?

A

By pressing a button on the intercom the pilot can isolate themselves from the passenger chatter, this can be done for the pilot and the co-pilot as well.

21
Q

What does the AUTO position do on the intercom system?

A

This selects the appropriate ‘listen’ COM purely by selecting the required ‘speak’ setting.

22
Q

What two types of noise cancelling headsets are there?

A

Passive and active noise reduction - the more noise reduction the better

23
Q

True or False? The microphone position is more optimum when placed at a close distance to the mouth.

24
Q

What is the PTT switch?

A

Push To Talk.

25
What must be done when transmitting on the radio? ## Footnote Name four.
1. Think of what you want to say first 2. Do not step on anyone 3. Speak clearly (maximum 100 words per minute) 4. if in a non-native english country speak slower.
26
What is the Primary Surveillance Radar?
-The PSR requires no equipment in the aircraft -Aircraft skin reflects the radar signal -Aircraft are seen as a blip and no other information provided -Can detect weather as well (clutter)
27
What is required inside an aircraft for a secondary surveillance radar?
A transponder.
28
When an aircraft transponder detects being hit by radar signal, what does it do?
the transponder transmits UHF signals from the aircraft, the return signal from the aircraft is much stronger.
29
Additional information is transmitted from the transponder as part of the return signal, What are the three transponder operating mode?
Alpha (A) Charlie (A + C) Sierra (A + C + S)
30
What is mode Alpha on a transponder?
Mode Alpha return signal includes a four digit code set by the pilot on the unit (Octal 0-7 only)
31
What is mode Charlie on a transponder?
Mode Charlie Include mode A but also reports the altitude of the aircraft sensed by the internal altimeter set to 1013.
32
What is mode Sierra on a transponder?
Mode Sierra includes mode Charlie and a large amount of other information including a unique 6 hex code which the ground receiver translates to the aircraft callsign.
33
What are the four mode selections on the Transponder?
1. OFF (unit is off/unpowered) 2. SBY (unit is in standby mode and will not transmit) 3. ON ( /A, Transponder will transmit the code set) 4. ALT ( /C, the unit will transmit the code set by the pilot plus the aircraft FL)
34
What does SERA.130001 enforce?
Requires the pilot equipped with SSR to operate the transponder in all times and airspaces.
35
What is the Transponder Altitude Reporting Tolerances (AIP ENR 1.2.1.4(e))?
If on verification there is a difference of 200ft between the level readout and the reported level, the pilot may be asked to switch off Mode C pressure altitude reporting mode on the transponder. If that is not possible due to being independent the pilot may be instructed to select mode A and code 0000 (transponder malfunction)
36
What is the transponder code 0000?
Transponder malfunction.
37
What is the transponder code 2000 (non-IFR)?
Mode A when on aerodrome surface, under tow, parked or prior to selecting SBY or OFF (unless otherwise instructed by ATC)
38
What is the transponder code 2000 (IFR)?
This is the IFR conspicuity code if no specific code has been issued by ATC and flying IFR.
39
What is the transponder code 7000?
This is the VFR conspicuity code set on all flights unless instructed otherwise by ATC.
40
What is the transponder code 7004?
Aerobatic Conspicuity code.
41
What is the transponder code 7500?
Illegal interference.
42
What is the transponder code 7600?
Communications (radio) failure.
43
What is the transponder code 7700?
Distress, or pilots who have inadvertently entered IMC conditions who are not qualified.
44
What is the transponder code 0030?
LOST, if lost and not in contact with ATC call London Center on 121.500MHz.
45
With a press button type transponder what should be done?
Once turned on leave it on, Just press buttons for the new code.
46
What should be done with a Dial type transponder?
Make sure it is on SBY before selecting a code, then set it back to mode C.
47
What is the IDENT function used for on a transponder?
Should only be used when asked to do so by ATC, press the button once and a flash on your blimp on the radar will show to the controller to distinguish you between other aircraft.
48
What will ATC likely say when asking you to IDENT?
"G-BORK squark IDENT".
