Protein Structure Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the 4 levels of protein structure?
Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary
Explain the primary structure of protein
Sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
Explain the secondary structure of protein
Hydrogen bonding of the peptide backbone causes the amino acids to fold into a repeating pattern
Two types:
- beta-sheet
- alpha helix
Explain the tertiary structure of protein
Three-dimensional folding pattern of a protein due to side chain interactions
Explain the quaternary protein structure
Protein consisting of more than one amino acid chain
What happens to a protein if it becomes denatured?
It disrupts the hydrogen and ionic bonds holding the tertiary structure together and the proteins lose their functionality
How would changes in a particular amino acid affect protein structure and function?
Even changing just one amino acid in a protein’s sequence can affect the protein’s overall structure and function
