Protista (Amoeba) Flashcards
(11 cards)
In which kingdom is amoeba?
Protista
What is an amoeba?
It is microscopic organism that lives at the bottom of shallow freshwater ponds and streams (other species of Amoeba are found in sea water).
Is an amoeba heterotrophic or autotrophic?
Heterotrophic
Is an amoeba carnivorous, herbivorous or omnivorous?
Omnivorous
What are the elements of an amoeba?
Pseudopods, ectoplasm, endoplasm, cell membrane, contractile vacuole, food vacuole, nucleus, digestive vacuole
What is the function of the cell membrane?
- Keeps the cell contents in place
- Allows gases to diffuse in and out through the cell membrane
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the cell
What is the function of the amoeba’s food vacuole?
- Secrete acid and enzymes to kill and then digest the prey.
- Digested material is absorbed from the food vacuole into the cytoplasm.
What is the function of the amoeba’s pseudopodia?
- Extend in the direction amoeba wishes to move. The cytoplasm (endoplasm) moves or flows into the pseudopodia causing the cell to move.
- Pseudopodia are also used to surround (engulf) the prey.
What is the function of the amoeba’s contractile vacuole?
- Amoeba lives in fresh water. This means its cytoplasm is more concentrated than its external environment. As a result, water enters Amoeba by osmosis.
- The contractile vacuole collects water that enters Amoeba. It then expands, touches the cell membrane and bursts to expel the water. Without a contractile vacuole Amoeba would expand and burst.
Movement of contractile vacuole?
Look at diagram of how contractile vacuole moves around amoeba and releases excess water.
