Q

why is it hard to pin down a constructivist?

A

Constructivists claim there is no objective reality or human nature. Thus, they make no blanket statements about human nature or societies.

What they do say is that humans and human structures are flexible and vary over space and time.

Q

feminism and development

A

Feminist believe that economic development alleviates women from their traditional roles.
- Gender equality marches hand and hand with modernity
- The growth of capitalism turns traditional societies into more modern ones
- Patriarchal control and the subjugation of women lessen as the individual is valued in terms of their contribution to the productive process.
- As a result more egalitarian family structures emerge
Opportunities for women to gain an education and enter the workforce expand

Q

Neo-marxist (1960s-1970s)

A

Capitalist exploitation exists on an international level
Emphasis on global inequality- massive wealth and development disparities between states.
Desire for profit has transnational characters
Developed states exploit non developed states by extracting resources from them and making them dependent on the markets of developed economies for export of others for profit.
The process of free trade, privatization, and deregulation has created a new form of imperialism or neo-colonialism that keeps developing states dependent on wealthier states for development
