psychodynamic approach Flashcards
(5 cards)
role of unconscious
what we know about and are aware of = conscious mind - only the tip of the iceberg
most of mind is made up out of unconscious (biological drives and instincts and threatening memories that have been repressed)
preconscious = between conscious and unconscious = bc aware of during dreams or slips of the tongue
structure of personality
id = pleasure principle
ego = reality principle = mediator between two = manages this through defence mechanisms
superego = morality principle = punishes ego for wrongdoing through guilt
defence mechanisms
repression = forcing a distressing memory out of conscious mind
denial = refusing to acknowledge something is real
displacement = transfer distressing feels to another target
psychosexual stages
bb
psychosexual stages
if (in order of stages) don’t resolve conflict will keep that consequence w them for life and can’t move onto next stage
oral = pleasure = mouth (mother breast) = oral fixation eg smoking and sarcastic
anal = pleasure = anus (withholding/expelling faeces) = anal retentive - perfectionist, anal expulsive- messy
phallic = pleasure = genital (boys desire for mother, girls desire for dad and hate other parent) = phallic personality - reckless possible homosexual
latency = earlier conflicts repressed = no consequence needed to be resolved to move onto next stage
genital = sexual desires are conscious (alongside puberty) = difficulty forming heterosexual rs
