role of unconscious

A

what we know about and are aware of = conscious mind - only the tip of the iceberg

most of mind is made up out of unconscious (biological drives and instincts and threatening memories that have been repressed)

preconscious = between conscious and unconscious = bc aware of during dreams or slips of the tongue

ego = reality principle = mediator between two = manages this through defence mechanisms
superego = morality principle = punishes ego for wrongdoing through guilt

repression = forcing a distressing memory out of conscious mind
denial = refusing to acknowledge something is real
displacement = transfer distressing feels to another target

if (in order of stages) don’t resolve conflict will keep that consequence w them for life and can’t move onto next stage

oral = pleasure = mouth (mother breast) = oral fixation eg smoking and sarcastic

anal = pleasure = anus (withholding/expelling faeces) = anal retentive - perfectionist, anal expulsive- messy

phallic = pleasure = genital (boys desire for mother, girls desire for dad and hate other parent) = phallic personality - reckless possible homosexual

latency = earlier conflicts repressed = no consequence needed to be resolved to move onto next stage

genital = sexual desires are conscious (alongside puberty) = difficulty forming heterosexual rs
