Psychodynamic Theory - Freud Flashcards
(15 cards)
Who was the psychodynamic theory developed by and what’s its focus
Developed by Freud
It focuses on the understanding behaviour by examining early childhood experience and the role of the unconcerned mind
According to freud what part of the mind controls behaviour including criminality
The unconscious mind controls behaviour including criminality
What are the three components of the psyche
The id
The ego
The superego
What is the role of the ID in Freud model of the pshyce
The id controls our selfish and animalistic urges seeking immediate gratification. It operates in the unconscious mind
How does the ego mediate between the ID and Superego
The ego seeks rational control balancing the desire of the ID and the moral demands of the superego trying to be practical and realistic
How does the superego influence behaviour
The superego acts as our moral conscience guiding us to sheet to social rules and morals telling us what is right and wrong
In a conflict between going to a party and doing homework what would the ID ego and superego suggest
Id - immediate gratification so party instead of homework
Superego - social and moral rules so stay home and do homework
Ego - practical balance so do some homework first then go to party
What balance is necessary for a healthy personality according to Freud
Healthy personality requires a balance between the Id ego and superego
What happens if the id dominates in the personality
The mind may become uncontrollable leading to criminality
What is the outcome if the superego is dominant
Can result in a person becoming over moralistic expecting perfection and being judgmental if this is not achieved
What happens if the ego is dominant
Results in someon being incapable of accepting and desriring a rigid and fixed life’s
How do children progress in their development according to Freud
Children need to progress form the pleasure principle (id dominated seeking instant gratification) to the reality principle ( ego dominated more rational )
Why do some criminals fail to transition properly according to Freud
Criminals are children who do not successfully make transition from pleasure principle to reality principle
What rule does stable home environment play in Freud theory
A stable home environment is necessary for children to successfully make the transition for, the pleasure principle to reality principle
What did John Bowlby 1944 study in maternal deprivation find
39% of Juvenile delinquents had experienced complete separation from their mother first 6 months or more in early childhood compared to 5% of a control group
