What is the therapy?
Dream Analysis
What did Freud believe about dreams
- the unconscious mind was lifted
- therapists can identify significant conflicts through symbolic imagery in dreams
Freud’s first assumption
Dreams have content that we can recall
* THE MANIFEST CONTENT
Freud’s second assumption
beneath the manifest content lies the actual meaning of the dream
* THE LATENT CONTENT
Things that appear in dreams actually are symbolic
Freud’s third assumption
DREAM WORK
- latent content is distorted into manifest content
How is the Dream Work theory overcome?
offering multiple interpretations of the dream based on patients feedback and life experiences
How does it apply to the approach?
- we behave the way we do because of unconscious drives
- dream analysis aims to make the ‘unconscious, conscious’
Effectiveness strength
Research provided a link between dreaming and primary thinking
- shows brains memory and motivation are still active in REM sleep
- unconscious in given ‘free rein’
Effectiveness strength
- computer simulations show that neural networks deal with overloaded memories by condensing them
- supports the ideas that unacceptable desires are censored and appear in MANIFEST CONTENT
Effectiveness weakness
Because the individual is connected to a machine and wires it lacks authenticity
Low ecological validity
Effectiveness weakness
Dreams are interpreted by a psychologist so its subjective to their beliefs
Ethical weakness
confronting clients can be distressing
fail to protect their clients from harm
Ethical weakness
imbalance of power between client and therapist
patient is dependent on the therapist to make any progress in the therapy
dynamic between the two may lead to a sense of helplessness and prolong suffering
What is the relationships theory
The Continuity Hypothesis
how does a secure person experience mothers, adults and love
Mothers - close & warming
Adults - positively, thriving in relationships
Love - secure, stable and loving
how does a resistant person view mothers, adults and love
Mothers - inconsistant memories
Adults - obsessed with love, dont feel happy when alone
Love - obsessive, jealous, emotional highs and lows
How does an avoidant person view mothers, adults and love
Mothers - mother was cold & rejecting
Adults - love is painful
Love - avoid intimacy, instigate flings and one-night stands
What does it imply ?
first relationships with a mother determine how you interpret love as an adult
