What was general public opinion to the Empire in the period 1914-47?

A

Few would’ve questioned its importance. Seen as something of prestige and its value. Some people were impressed by Gandhi when he came. Didn’t vote for the labour party to abolish the Empire. Lamented the loss of India in 1947.

How did the Government themselves choose to promote Empire?

A

Empire Marketing Board set up in 1926. Staging of exhibitions, such as the Wembley Exhibition of 1924 that the government contributed half the £2.2 million cost. 17 million attended 1924, 9 million attended 1925.

A

Empire was a focal point for teaching geography, history and literature. Imperial History was studied in Cambridge University. Universities also trained Colonial Servants.

A

Children’s literature celebrated Empire such as G.A Henty. Feature films such as Sanders of the River and The Four Feathers had a background of Empire. Government insisted Empire was always shown in a positive light.

To what extent were the ideas of Empire spread?

A

There is a strong sense that imperial propaganda was growing, but not much evidence it was being consumed.
Could be the fact that they had to spread these ideas so much that not many people actually cared about Empire.
Could depend on social class and age.
