what is a pressure ulcer
soft tissue injury resulting from compression between bony prominence and an external surface
what causes a pressure ulcer?
extra pressure limits blood flow between the skin, area becomes starved of oxygen and nutrients
what is the layers of skin in order?
top - epidermis
middle- dermis
what is the purpose of epidermis layer?
stratified outer layer, keratinsed, acts as a barrier and regulates moisture levels
what are the main cells found in the epidermis
keratinocytes
what is the purpose of the dermis?
connective tissue, support and nourish the epidermis
complications of wound healing
-deficient scar formation
-excessive scar formation
what are features of the dermis
blood vessels, hair follicles, nerve endings
what dressing would you use for necrotic tissue?
honey, hydrogel, hydrocolloid
what dressing would you use for slough wounds?
if moist - hydrofirbe
if low moisture- hydrogel and honey
what dressings would you put on a granulating tissue?
low moisture- hydrogel and foam
high moisture- hydrofibre
what dressings would you use for epithelial tissue
hydrocolloid , nonadherent dressings
