Purifying Water Flashcards

1
Q

How does the water cycle purify water

A

The water cycle purifies water through the evaporation and transpiration
Although it purifies pollutants can enter at any time

Q

What does potable mean, and the 7 steps to water treatment

A

Potable- safe to drink
Water treatment 7 steps:
1. Water enters through a grat, this filters out big solids
2.Pumps move the water to the plant
3. Chemicals are added, they stick to sediment and bacteria
4. Sediment falls down into a settling tank
5. Water is pumped through filters, this gets the smaller stuff out
6. More chemical like ozone or chlorine are added
7. Water is pumped to your house

Q

Sewage treatment Plant

A

Your water is brought to a sewage plant, cleaned and then put into the River
In Rural area they have septic tanks, where the sewage water is stored. They are eventually cleaned or emptied into a septic field.
Waste water is called effluent

Q

Sustaining our water

A

Means to manage it so we have a reliable supply for the present and the future
As the population grows the demand for water does too.
Some countries are forced to convert sea water into fresh water. This is costly and hard to do on a big scale
Other methods are reverse osmosis and distillation

Q

Reverse Osmosis

A

High pressure pushes water through a membrane and toward pur water, the solids and dissolved minerals are left behind.
For salt water big stuff goes first then they use pumps to get out the dissolved salts.

Q

Distillation

A

The solvent is heated into a gas then condensed into a liquid again. This creates pure water with no minerals or chemicals.
