Q3-becoming a teacher Flashcards
(5 cards)
what are the skills and qualities a teacher must possess?
-organisational skills as teaching requires a lot of background work, especially in university I know that detailed lesson plans must be produced for each lesson that is taught
-positive and motivational, since Covid childrens PIES have decreased and so having a fun and also educational classroom setting will help to tackle this issue effectively
-reliable and honest, parents must feel comfortable as they are leaving their child in your care, must know what you are an effective communicator and will be able to tell them your concerns about the child in a polite and professional manner
-kind, seen as a caregiver to the child, seen as a role model, treat every child as an individual which links to the ability to differenciate to allow each child to get the most out of their education e.g. giving kids who understand the topic an extension work and those who are struggling extra assistance
-ability to maintain professional relationships and be able to adapt the way they communicate to the children, fellow collogues and parents
-very familiar with child safeguarding and pastrol care
-classroom management, non verbal communication and being an active listener, multitasking
-inclusive and non judgemental
-clear boundaries and high standards for all pupils so that they achieve the best that they can and get the most out of their education
-consistent
-has catholic values
-relational learning for students, respect goes both ways
why do you want to be a teacher?
-my dream since I could read and discovered Matilda
-wanted to be miss honey and made myself the teacher in all games with my primary school friends
-want to make a strong impactful difference in childrens lives which I realise is most applicants answers however I want to give all students, especially girls, the chance to take part in more STEM related subjects
-help to break gender stereotypes
-all experiences I have had have been positive- working in the primary school leading groups in their morning literacy through games associated with their spellings of the week, Derry GAA for all allowed me to understand the different perspectives of children and allow me to expand my knowledge on how to differenciate and adapt my teaching methods in order to effectively communicate with them and earn their respect
-I have been lucky to have had an extremely positive experience in school life, my favourite teacher encouraged me to come pout of my shell, treated all of us with kindness but still maintained authority as the teacher
-want others to be able to have the same positive experience as me
what are the positives and negatives of being a teacher?
-positives
=critical role in the development of the child not just intellectually but also socially, emotionally and physically
=rewarding job that helps children flourish in a safe and caring environment
=help to make a difference in childrens lives particularly those who may have a difficult home life, use quote
=creativity and fun through teaching a range of subjects outlined in the curriculum such as maths and numeracy, english, world around us, physical education, PMDU and religion
-negatives
=work load/ behind the scenes work can cause emotional burnout due to the lack of work life balance
=hard to essential shut off from work, leave it in the classroom, teachers will constantly be thinking about their students
=lots of planning goes into teaching
=lack of government funding has resulted in a lack of resources
=less funding for SEN registery and SENCO teachers
=Covid caused a decline in childrens PIES which then causes added stress to teachers as the parents will have high expectations for their child
=differenciation of teach9ing methods e.g those struggling need extra support
=EAL despite it decreasing, is still a challeneg which is faced by teachers, ways to tackle this would be maybe labelling classroom items in their language and it english
=scaffolding learning which is where no child starts with nothing, it is hard for teachers to initially discover where each child is at in the various stages of their development
=23/24 budget for education was reduced by 2.5% by stormont
=classroom management safe and quiet classroom where pupils feel comfortable asking questions, carry out risk assessments
=rise in technology and decrease in motivation, use of ai, key skills part of the curriculum so teachers must adapt to interdisciplinary learning
is the most important thing a teacher needs a deep understanding of the subject they are teaching? what is the role of a teacher?
-to a certain extent yes
=parents are trusting their child in your care
=you are one of the most influential figures in their lives so what you say to them is very important
=they will listen to what you are saying, so if your teaching them wrong they will be able to communicate this to their parents
=questions then arise that if you don’t know how to teach this subject, how can they trust that you are the best fit for their child, how can they trust you
-overall no
=as important a thorough understanding of the subject you are teaching is
=the pastrol care of the child is far greater
=a teacher must be emotionally intelligent and be able to spot if a pupil is not being themselves e.g. more quiet/ loud, not doing homework, doing bad in tests, their work is not to the same standard or are exhibiting disruptive behaviour
=teachers must be able to acknowledge this and tackel the issues as effectively as possible to ensure that the child is being safeguarded both in school and outside of it
=teachers must support the child’s development socially and emotionally as well
=NI curriculum outlines that one of the main areas of study is PDMU- personal development and mutual understanding, where children are encouraged to branch out and form relationships with their peers in a safe environment where any conflicts can be resolved restoratively
=it also teaches childrens of their rights and responsibilities
=the fact that a primary school teacher is also a caregiver is in my opinion the most important thing, only when a child feels safe and happy will they then be able to learn and grow in a classroom setting
