Q

what experiences have you had working with children and what have you learnt from these?

A

-one of 6 children= early age given responsibility/ mature/ seen as a second mammy/ Covid nurse so I had to do all the childrens online learning/ cook dinners
-Ciaran= non verbal/ adapt teaching and communicatory methods/ empathy/ new perspectives
-GAA for All= 8 week training sessions/ one on one allowed me to build relationships and rapport/ respect/ eye opening/ rewarding
-primary school= 5 weeks/ morning literacy work/ lead group with games associated with that weeks spellings e.g. spelling board games with dice, cutting and sticking sentences, blocks with letters on them, using whiteboards/ first hand experiences with teaching/helped to help me understand classroom dynamics e.g. relationships between teachers and assistants and the ways that teachers communicate with their pupils e.g. help to diffuse an argument
-musical= junior school/ makeup team/ formed relationships which I wouldn’t have been able to/ asked specifically to work backstage/ stressful costume changes but best experience
-paired reading= working with a first year for 8 weeks reading/ build their confidence/ friendships/ learnt different teaching methods specific to reading
-in the primary school worked with a young SEN boy who had difficulties with regulating his emotions and staying on task/ used a small sand timer to help with this/ calm corner/ walks outside helped in too as the school encourages the children to bring their wellies with them/ used songs every morning corresponding with their words of the week

Q

how would you handle a reluctant learner/ conflicts in the classroom?

A

-calm yourself first in order to make a rational decision in a calm way and not resort to shouting
-shouting should be avoided as it will startle the children and impact the overall atmosphere of the classroom, upset children who are innocent and had nothing to do with the matter at hand
-understand the situation is this child a repeat offender or is it sparatic
-understand why they may be acting like this e.g. may not understand the lesson whilst their friends so having negative feelings about themselves, are they sick, are they SEN diagnosed, maybe coming from an unhappy home, maybe had a bad nights sleep, cannot healthily cope with their emotions
-get down to their level using eye contact to show that they have your attention
-ask them nicely what is going on
-if possible adapt your teaching methods, e.g. they may be a visual learner rather than an auditory learner- only 5% of children are auditory learners
-set small goals/ link to experience in the primary school
-take a brain break for the children, if its a nice day allow them outside for 10 minutes to expend their energy
