A

Be a team leader and team player
•Be calm in a stressful situation
triage skills
•Be able to quickly perform a thorough physical exam
•Be competent at venipuncture at various veins and
placement of IV catheters
•Be competent at giving meds IV, SQ, IM
•Be able to perform endotracheal intubation
•Be able to quickly obtain a blood pressure via Doppler
•Be able to run stat bloodwork such as PCV, TP, blood
gasses, clotting times, electrolytes
•Be able to perform CPCR if needed
•Monitor vital signs and recognize worsening signs
•Maintain accurate patient records and controlled
substance logs (if applicable)
•Provide TLC for the seriously ill patient
•Be understanding & patient with a distressed owner

Telephone Triage

A

Keep calm
Client’s name, location & phone number

* Presenting complaint/reason for the call +/- pertinent medical history
* Patient’s current condition
* How is your pet breathing? MM /CRT
* What is the level of consciousness (LOC)?
* Is the patient recumbent
* Patient’s expected time of arrival
Record everything
NEVER diagnose over the phone, 99.9% of the time if the owner is concerned
they should bring the pet in to be seen by a DVM
Your advice over the phone should consist of stabilizing the patient during
transport
