quiz 1 Flashcards
setting up lab and defintions and 8 charactertics of life
how to find IV + DV?
x depends on y ( x is dependent y is independent
ex. height depends on age.
growth depends on what you feed/put in it
theory defintion
an idea that is backed by mountains of evidence
ex. evolution + big bang theory
constant?
the thing that stays the same in the lab
ex. used same brand of gummy worms + same microscope
control?
thing you know is gonna happen
ex. if you are testing a plant growth if you give it water or gatorade. the plant getting water is contorl bc we know what will happen
experimental group?
the thing you don’t know will have
ex. giving a plant gatorade
hypothesis?
something that can be tested
qualitative vs quantitative?
qualitative is a quality (can’t graph)
ex. tall
quantitative is a number (its exact and can graph
ex. 6’1
peer review
your peers/colleagues that know the same subject your writing/article is agree or disagree with your writing
Made of one or more cells
in order to be alive you have to have cells
ex. if we took in elephant to its smallest pieces it would just be cells
- virus’s have no cells so they aren’t alive that is why you can’t kill them
display organazation
system that scientist use to display the smallest parts to the biggest parts of an organism
it’s cells-> tissues -> organs-> organisms
even plants have organization!
grows + develops
- growth is adding mass to an organsim forming new cells ( growth is being able to measure something)
-development is turning into a adult- being able to reproduce
ex. baby teeth -> adult teeth
puberty
gray hair when your old
a 3 year old can’t have a baby
respond to stimuli
any process that involves the change in state/activity of an organism or cell.
ex. respond to fish foood, coldness, spit
when tables get cold they don’t do anything but we put on a jacket
Reproduction
being able to make more of yourself
ex. bacterai makes more of yourself
humans make more humans
tables can’t make more of themselves
Requires energy
need energy to live
ex. have to eat a lot of food, if you stop eating (no more energy)
-plants -> sunlight
maintains homeostasis
maintaining internal stability
ex.
your body maintains your temp so your not to cold and not to hot. fight or flight. sweating when hot because it cools it off
adaptations evolve over time
have to evolve+ adapt or whole species dies
ex. adapting to warmer summers
ocean animals adapting to the warm oceans
where on a graph is the dependent and indpendent varibles?
dependant is the bar on the left going up and down and the independent is the flat one because it is on its own and the DV hangs on it
what are the 8 charactertics of life
- Made of one or more cells
- Display’s organization
- Grows + Develops
- Reproduces
5.Responds to stimuli - Requires energy
7.Maintains Homeostasis - Adaptations Evolve Over Time
