Quiz 2 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is the main source of microbial irritation to dental pulp?
Dental Caries
What’s Asepsis?
In vital cases preventing infection
What’s antisepsis?
In non-vital cases removing all microorganisms
What is the most common RCT infection?
Obligatory anaerobic bacteria
What’s the most common RCT failure bacteria?
E. Faecalis
What are the three pulpal irritants?
Mechanical
Microbial
Chemical
What types of Mechanical irritants are there?
Deep cavity prep Lack of cooling preps with water Impact trauma (cutting off the blood supply) Occlusal trauma Deep perio curettage Orthodontic movement
What types of things can cause Chemical irritant?
Dentin cleaning, sterilizing, desentitizing agents
Permanent composit materials
What are A-fibers?
Myelinated, quicker reception in dentin
Pain, temp, touch
What are C-fibers?
Unmyelinated.
Deep in the pulp
What are the zones of the pulp?
Odontoblasts
Cell free zone (Weil)
Cell rich zone
What’s in the cell rich zone of the pulp?
Fibroblasts, immune cells, blood vessels.
What are the 5 things to ask patients to help subjectively diagnose chief complaint?
Where is the pain? When did it first start? How intense is the pain? What sets it off and what relieves pain? How long does the pain last?
What are 5 things to objectively test patient to help diagnose?
Palpate (compared to the bilateral normal side)
Percussion biting (start with softer things then to a harder mirror handle if necessary)
Mobility (+1, +2, +3)
Pocket depth (perio exam)
Pulp tests
What’s a tooth sleuth?
It can fit right over a cusp and they bite to help determine if there’s a cuspal crack.
How to diagnose endo lesions radiographically?
Loss of lamina dura at the apex
Radiolucency resembles a “hanging drop”
Lucency remains at the apex
If a tooth has “internal resorption” in the canal is the tooth vital or non-vital?
Vital (inflammation needs blood to spread)
