quiz #2 instruments Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is periodontal debridement?
removal of bacteria plaque endotoxins and hard calculus from teeth
What is the goal of periodontal debridement?
prevent/stop infection + restore oral soft tissues health
What is the purpose of the modified pen grip? Explain.
good fingertip tactile sensitivity + precise instrument control
What instrument do you use the modified pen grip?
hand scalers (not morse) + probe and explorer
What are the 3 parts of the handle? Describe each.
Handle Shank Working end
Describe the sickle scaler.
angled cutting edge of scaler to scrape tartar and plaque off tooth
What are the uses for the sickle scaler? Towards or away from the gum line?
scrape tartar and plaque off tooth
away from gumline
Describe the morse scaler.
smaller held pencil grip
When would you use the morse scaler?
used straight onto tooth to clean ridges
Describe curettes.
have u shaped cross section with 1 or 2 cutting edges and a round toe
When do you use a curette?
removal of subgingival calculus from the sulcus + root planing
How can you tell the difference between a curette and sickle scaler?
curette has rounded edge that can go under the gingiva without causing harm
What are the 2 types of curettes? Which is used most in vet med?
Gracey and Universal **
Describe the periodontal probe.
no sharp edges used to measure depth gingival sulcus
How do you use the periodontal probe?
insert probe between gingiva and tooth root surface parallel to long axis of tooth. walk probe along circumference of each tooth in at least 4 directions
What are normal sulcus depths for dogs? Cats?
dog - 1-3 mm
cat - 0.5 -1mm
Describe the shepherd’s hook/explorer.
sharp tip only
How do you use the shepherd’s hook?
assess tooth motility detect calculus expose pulp chamber
What does the shepherd’s hook help you to feel?
abraisons + attrition
What is furcation?
where roots of multi rooted teeth meet and branch off
stage 1 furcation
furcation exposure with small amount of alveolar crest loss
What is the tooth mobility scoring index?
rating mobility of a tooth
Stage 0 mobility scoring
physiologic mobility up to 0.2mm
Describe elevators.
used to break the periodontal ligament in the aid for tooth extraction
