Quiz 8 Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is vibrato?
oscillation in pitch involving variation of a 1/2 step, and variation of amplitude, aspect of mature sound- contributes to richness of tone, 6-8 oscillations, natural phenomenon as they maintain breath control and a relaxed vocal apparatus
Reasons that vibrato is appropriate
improved tonal quality/color
improves intonation
improves fundamental frequency
prevents vocal fatigue
Problems of Singers without vibrato
imitation of poor tonal model breathy or glottal onset incorrect breath pressure tension in vocal mechanism high larynx position
Possible causes of wobble and one exercise
lack of proper breath support/ weak ab muscles lack of use of laryngeal muscles slackness in vocal folds heavy style of production exercise- slides to a fifth
What is tremolo and one exercise?
fast vibrato rate, 8-10 fluctuations in pitch/ sec
singers have strident, harsh sound
caused by- excessive breath pressure and laryngeal tension
exercise- onset and breathing
How do the Vox Humana and Voce Umana organ stops support the use of vibrato in Baroque and Renaissance music?
humana- uses reed pipes which resonate at different freq, creating vibrato. umana- flute pipes that are mistuned, uses tremulant causes wind pressure to vary
why do choral directors desire less vibrato for certain rep?
if they want to single specific voices/ draw attention from the audience to a particular phrase
piece has dissonance since vibrato creates intonation
how is healthy vibrato related to a coordinated onset?
vocal folds must be simultaneous with the flow of air, helps to produce vibrato
