R1 Flashcards
(34 cards)
What is the difference between heat and temperature?
Heat is the total energy transferred due to temperature difference; temperature measures the average kinetic energy of particles.
How is energy transferred in chemical reactions?
As heat, through bond breaking and forming.
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction that releases energy to the surroundings (ΔH < 0).
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that absorbs energy from the surroundings (ΔH > 0).
What happens to temperature in an exothermic reaction?
It increases.
What happens to temperature in an endothermic reaction?
It decreases.
How does the energy profile of an exothermic reaction look?
Reactants are higher than products; ΔH is negative.
How does the energy profile of an endothermic reaction look?
Products are higher than reactants; ΔH is positive.
What does the peak in an energy profile represent?
The activation energy.
What does ΔH⦵ represent?
Standard enthalpy change under standard conditions (298 K, 1 atm, 1 mol).
How is enthalpy change calculated using q = mcΔT?
q = mass × specific heat capacity × temperature change.
How to find enthalpy per mole from q?
ΔH = q / mol, usually converted to kJ/mol.
What happens when bonds are broken?
Energy is absorbed (endothermic).
What happens when bonds are formed?
Energy is released (exothermic).
How is ΔH calculated using bond enthalpies?
ΔH = Σ(bonds broken) - Σ(bonds formed).
What are average bond enthalpies?
Mean values from many molecules; used for estimating ΔH.
What is Hess’s Law?
The total enthalpy change is the same regardless of the reaction path.
How is Hess’s Law applied?
Use known enthalpies to construct an enthalpy cycle and solve for unknown ΔH.
What is the general equation for hydrocarbon combustion?
CxHy + O2 → CO2 + H2O.
What happens in incomplete combustion?
Produces CO or C (soot) instead of CO2.
What are the products of alcohol combustion?
CO2 and H2O (complete); CO or C and H2O (incomplete).
What are fossil fuels?
Coal, crude oil, and natural gas.
Why are fossil fuels a concern?
They release CO2, contributing to the greenhouse effect.
What is the greenhouse effect?
Trapping of heat in Earth’s atmosphere due to greenhouse gases like CO2 and CH4.
