what are the two types of radars?

A

primary and secondary surveillance radars.

how do primary surveillance radars work?

A

sends out a signal which bounces off everything that signal reaches. if the echo is received by the radar receiver, it produces an image on the radar screen.

the time delay between the transmission of the pulse and the receipt of the reflected return is a measure of range.

A

how do secondary surveillance radars work?

A

require an aircraft to have a transponder.

it broadcasts a signal which causes the transponder in an aircraft to respond with a signal. the transponder doesn’t transmit if it hasn’t been interrogated by the SSR.

what do Mode A and Mode C do?

A

mode a, it transmits a four digit code which is set by the pilot. if you filed a flight plane you’ll be assigned a specific code for the flight.

mode c will transmit the four digit code and the transponder will also transmit the aircraft altitude.
