radiation Flashcards
(51 cards)
how does radiation travel?
in straight lines through air
how far does radiation travel?
a few cm in air
when does radiation occur?
at random times
what do we use to measure radiation?
a geiger counter
what causes ionisation?
when radiation hits atoms within DNA
what can ionisation cause?
cancer
what does a geiger counter measure?
how many radioactive decays occur
what are the three main types of radiation?
alpha (A)
beta (B)
gamma (Y)
what are some safety precautions to take whilst doing a radiation experiment?
-wear goggles
-wear gloves
-use tweesers
-do not point the radioactive material at anyone
-use a source holder
how far can alpha radiation travel?
a fem cm in air
what is alpha radiation caused by?
alpha particle- 2 protons and 2 neutrons
what is beta radiation caused by?
fast moving electron
what type of radiation is gamma?
a beam of light
how far can beta radiation travel?
a few m in air
how far can gamma radiation travel?
infinitely far
what can stop alpha radiation?
a piece of paper
what can stop beta radiation?
alluminium
what can stop gamma radiation?
lead stops it mostly
what is dosage?
the amount of radiation we absorb
in order from most to least- what radiation causes the most ionisation? (damage)
alpha
beta
gamma
what is ionisation?
removing an electron
what causes radiation to be given off?
when an atom has too many protons or neutrons it will fall apart and give off radiation
radioactive decay is…
random- there is no way of telling when an atom will decay
what is half-life?
the time it takes for half of a substances atoms to decay
