wiring in the home Flashcards
(19 cards)
what is the yellow and green wire?
the earth wire
where is the earth wire found?
top left
what voltage is the earth wire?
0V
what is the blue wire?
the neutral wire
what does the neutral wire do?
completes the circuit
what voltage is the neutral wire?
0V
where is the neutral wire?
bottom left
what is the brown wire?
the live wire
what does the live wire do?
it carries electricity and alternates between +1-230 Volts 50 times each second
what is a direct current?
electricity that goes one way
what is alternating current?
electricity that goes one way and then the other 50 times each second
if too much current passes through a wire what happens?
the fuse melts and the electrical current is broken
what do you do to stop the fuse melting?
pick a fuse rating which is slightly higher than the current of the appliance
what happens if the fuse rating is too low?
it immediately fails
what happens if the fuse rating is too high?
it might fail when you don’t want it to
what could happen if insulation is damaged around a wire?
it could leave the wire exposed and make someone touch it which would result in an electrical shock
what does the earth wire do?
it prevents the electrical casting from becoming live
what does low current in the national grid allow for?
minimises power loss
what is the rating of a fuse?
the current it takes for the fuse in the circuit to break
