Raine Flashcards
(3 cards)
weaknesses of M+P
-no causal conclusions can be drawn because it was a quasi experiment as the IV (NGRI or not) was naturally occuring rather than manipulated by the researcher, so findings cant show that violent behaviour is biologically determined alone.
-The sample- murderers were not typucal of all violent individuals. Raine acknowledges the findings dont show that all violent offenders have brain dysfunctions- the study can only conclude NGRI offenders
strength of M+P
+PET scans allow researchers to study detailed regions of the brain , also allow to see brain in action to be examined, so Raine could examine how brains of different individuals differs in the way information is processed.
ethical and social
-valid consent? murderers pleading NGRI mentally competent to consent?
-psychological harm? eg, find CPT task difficult reduce slef esteem or find PET scan a distressing experience
-may not understand right to withdraw as prisoners, cant say they no longer want to participate
-socially sensitive research if findings indicate murderers are born rather than made, consequences for other people with similar brain abnormalities and the murderers in this research.
