Rate And Extent Of Chemical Change Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the collision theory?
The rate of chemical reaction depends on the collision frequency of reacting particles, the more collisions the faster the reaction is depending on the transferred energy during a collision
The rate of reaction depends on what 4 things ?
1- Temperature
2- the concentration of a solution or pressure of gas
3- surface area
4- pressure of a catalyst
How does temperature increase the rate of reaction?
As the particles will move quicker with a high temperature they will collide more having more energy to react
Increasing the concentration/ pressure increases the rate of reaction how ?
If it is more concentrated there is more particles moving about in the same volume or when the pressure increases of a gas the same number of particles move in a smaller amount of space
Increasing the surface area increases the rate of reaction how ?
If one of the reactants is a solid then is broken up into smaller pieces will increase its surface area to volume ratio. The same volume of the solid the particles will have more area to move around having more collisions.
How can a catalyst increase the rate of reaction?
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction without it being used up in the reaction itself, this means it isn’t part of the overall equation. They all work by decreasing the activation energy needed for the reaction to occur
What are the 3 ways the measure the rate of reaction ?
1- percipitation and colour change
2- change in mass
3- the volume of gas given off
Rates of reaction equation ?
Rates of reaction=amount of reactant used/ time
Mean rate of reaction?
Mean Rate of reaction= change in y / change in x
Reversible reactions are showed through what symbol?
Two arrows pointing either ways with a half each
What is le chateliers principle?
The idea that if you change the conditions of a reversible reaction at equilibrium, the system will try counteract that change. Can be used to predict the effect of any changed you make to a reaction system
Changes in temperature in a reaction can be ?
Exothermic reactions one way and endothermic the other in the reversed reaction
What is the control variable ?
What you keep the same
