Reactivity series Flashcards
(48 cards)
What does the reactivity series show
List of metals arranged in order of their reactivity from highest to lowest
Which group of metal is at the top of the reactivity series
Group 1
What group of metal is near the bottom of the reactivity series
Transitional Metal
What is a displacement reaction
When a more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal in a reaction
What is an ionic equation
Equation that includes the ion involved in the chemical reaction that lose/gain electron
e.g
Mg + Cu²⁺ –> Mg²⁺ + Cu
What is a Redox Reaction
The transfer of ions between molecule, Reduction and oxidation
Reduction reaction
Losing oxygen AND/OR gain electron
e.g
Mg + Cu²⁺ –> Mg²⁺ + Cu
Copper is reduction
Oxidation reaction
Gaining oxygen AND/OR losing electron
e.g
Mg + Cu²⁺ –> Mg²⁺ + Cu
Magnesium is oxidation
What happens to the reactivity of Group 1 metals as you go down the group?
-> It increases as it go down.
-> Because the valence electrons is further away from the nucleus
-> There is a weaker electrostatic force of attraction between the nucleus and valence electron
-> Easier for the atom to lose electrons.
What is the product of metal + water
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
What is the product of metal + acid
Salt + hydrogen
What is the product of metal + oxygen
Metal oxide
How do you test for group 1 metal in the reactivity series
Add the metal into water and observe how reactive it is.
And then add Ph indicator into water, if it turns purple, it is group 1 metal
This is because they are alkali metal
What is the equation for rusting
iron + oxygen -moisture-> hydrous iron(iii) oxide
Why does the barrier method avoid rusting
This prevents oxygen from reaching the metal/iron and slows rusting
What can you use as a barrier method
Oil or paint
What is galvanisation
Covering iron with a zinc coating to prevent oxygen from reacting with iron
Also act as a sacrificial metal
How does the sacrificial metal method work
Placing a more reactive metal around the iron to allow oxygen to react with the more reactive metal first
e.g on ship’s hull
What does iron need to rust
Water (moisture) and oxygen
Why is galvanising more effective than using paint as barrier method
Even when the zinc is scratched, the zinc will act as a sacrificial metal and still protect the rust
Why is there no temperature rise when gold is added
As gold is inert and unreactive
What is an oxidising agent
A substance that will cause oxidisation to happen
e.g
Mg + Cu²⁺ –> Mg²⁺ + Cu
Magnesium is oxidation
and Copper is oxidising agent
What kind of method of protection from rusting should a car body use
Paint
What kind of method of protection from rusting should a bucket use
Galvanising
