Key points about the early promise of islet transplantation

A
  1. The FDA voted to endorse pancreatic islet transplant product for treatment of brittle type1 diabetes that can’t be managed with current therapies.
  2. They decided to regulate allogeneic islet cells as a biologic (1993).
  3. Researcher’s from University of Illinois formed a company to file a biologics license application (BLA) to bring allo-islets to market.
