Flashcards in Reality Therapy Deck (11):
Basic Assumptions of this theory
-symptoms result of choices we've made
-emphasis on personal responsibility
-focus on present
-we control own behavior
-can only give others information
- most probs rooted in relationships
- past connected to who we are now- can only satisfy basic needs now and in future
The only person you can control is yourself.
1. Basic Needs
2. Internal Control
4. Quality World
5. Total Behavior
Belonging (primary need )
Survival (Physiological needs)
External factors just give us information—we control our behaviors
You cannot control others, only yourself
We make choices that influence our feelings, thoughts and actions
External control language reflects our lack of understanding of our choices
you have choices and you can always make new ones
consists of our visions of specific people, activities, events, beliefs and situations that will fulfill our needs – our IDEAL life
Four elements: acting, thinking, feeling, and physiology – all interact
Can only choose acting and thinking (called “Doing”) – based on our cognitions
What we “do” affects our feelings and physiology – based on behaviors
Clients who state they are depressed/anxious..
according to Glasser these people are not taking responsibility for their actions and they are choosing these behaviors.
W- Wants: What do you want to be and do?
D-Doing and Direction: What are you doing? Where do you want to go?
E- Evaluation:Does your present behavior have a reasonable chance of getting you what you want?
