Recognition of upset and Instrument scanning Flashcards
(7 cards)
Startle Effect
The initial short-term, involuntary physiological and cognitive reactions to an unexpected event that commence the normal human stress response.
Effect:
- a brief period of disorientation as well as short term psychomotor impairment which may well lead to task interruptions and/or a brief period of confusion. Strategies for Improving Startle Per
Strategies for Improving Startle Performance
Know your aircraft * Develop a sound technical knowledge of your aircraft type and maintain it with regular revision
Maintain handling skills * Be competent and comfortable flying the aircraft
Train appropriately * Simulator exercises should be conducted in a constructive manner with a focus on evidence based (most likely) events.
Be cognizant of the environment * Maintain situational awareness at all times.
Avoid complacency * Have a healthy expectation and suspicion for things going wrong
Instrument Scanning 4 Step Process
First step: Attitude + Power = Performance
Second step: Trap Door and Fine Tuners
Third step: Primary Instrument Scan
Fourth step: Circular Instrument Scan
Senseitivity of Turn coordinator and VSI
Sensitivity: The TC will show a turn before the
heading indicator reacts; the VSI will show a climb or
descent before the altimeter reacts.
NOSE-HIGH ATTITUDE
Indications:
Decreasing a/s
Rapid gain in alt
High rate of climb
nose-high attitude on the AI
Recovery:
Add power
Apply forward elevator pressure
Correct bank by applying coordinated rudder and aileron pressure to level miniature a/c & center ball of TC
NOSE-LOW ATTITUDE
Indications:
Increasing a/s
Rapid loss of alt
High rate of descent
nose-low attitude on the AI
Recovery:
reduce power
Correct bank by applying coordinated rudder and aileron pressure to level miniature a/c & center ball of TC
Apply smooth elevator back pressure to level off
Upset Prevention
✔Maintain situational awareness
✔Control inputs should be decisive and not abrupt
✔Scan outside references in all directions
✔Follow checklists and procedures
✔Keep Calm
